12 April – I’ll Have a Full English Please

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening readers,

Ahhh… what a day of British bliss! It was almost like I was back in blighty.

This afternoon was a huge embrace from my British comfort zone. As if I were slowing immersing myself into a warm British sea (we know these don’t exist, it’s just for poetic purposes). The last eleven days have been different and hectic to say the least, so a small breather was very much welcomed.

Dipping my toe into the British sea..
We’ve been organising English club for a few days now and explaining all of our slang words to the office has been hilarious. I introduced one of the volunteers to Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses and this morning she came in and referenced “Rodney you plonka!”. Oh man, that literally made my day. Other words we introduced them too included “Aggy, blimmin heck, mate, mardy and knackered”.

Waist deep in the British sea..
That afternoon we carried out an English club session and it went pretty well. We told everyone a bit about the UK and also bragged about Colchester being Britain’s oldest recorded town. Guys, that never impresses in England and it certainly fell on deaf ears here. Armenia is SO old and Colchester is but a mere infant. The volunteers then imagined what it would be like arriving in London and completed a writing exercise. Their comments included the following:

“It is grey, everyone is pale, I visited Big Ben and I ate lots of junk food”.

Big up to all the pale people eating junk food outside of Big Ben. Represent. Every time I teach I realise how much I love it and also miss it. They were an absolute pleasure.

Happily Drowning in the British sea..
Next stop on the British line was a film, in English, with no translation required! Lardy, Lardy you do know how to treat me Universe! In a cafe we watched The Life of Loving Vincent and there is only one way to describe it.. beautifully tragic. The whole animation is created from oil painters and was completed by over one hundred of the talented rascals. It is an absolute must see.

As much as I am thoroughly enjoying learning everything about Armenia and its language, it was just so lovely to have one day back in my British bubble. Alas, tomorrow it is back into the language rat race and I am raring to go!

In kindness,
C x
